Sharing the virtues of reading, school libraries and public education in Kelowna.
Our mission is to develop multiple literacies and support student achievement by developing an exemplary school library program.
The Library at Kelowna Secondary includes a large facility, trained library staff and an up to date collection of 30,000 books, reference and video resources. The library staff comprises of two experienced teacher-librarians, and one fulltime library assistant. The program provides a variety of service points support the diverse needs of 1700 grade 10-12. Ms. Bede(1.0) and Mr. Smith(0.6) believe it is important to nurture and model a culture of learning that helps transition students toward broad post-secondary opportunities. Preparing students for the 21st century educational landscape demands a challenging blend of literacy and technology initiatives. Through a dedication to quality instruction, collection development, technology integration, literacy support and professional service, the KSS Library Program strives to be an exemplary model of teacher-librarianship.
Our library program concentrates on the goals required to recognise student success. We achieve these goals by collaboratively teaching information literacy and information technology skills outlined in the “Information Communication and Technology” IRP. A second important strand is to develop an environment that builds scholarship, critical thinking, and reading skills. Our passion is driven by our love of literature and the dedication to nurture experiences and skills required for the ‘information age’.
